CHURCH ARCHAEOLOGY
Churches, chapels, monasteries and religious buildings take many forms and historic periods. The JESSOP Consultancy is experienced at project managing, researching and recording all aspects of this important part of our cultural heritage. 

Recent and current work in Cathedrals includes:

• St Paul's Cathedral:

Oliver Jessop is the Consultant Archaeologist with current projects including work on the TWICE centre of excellence and the installation of new external lighting.

• Winchester Cathedral:

Oliver Jessop is the Consultant Archaeologist with current projects including work on the external repairs of the South Nave Aisle, the Watergate Walls and the preparation of an Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment (ADBA) for the whole of the Close and Cathedral Buildings.

• Lichfield Cathedral:

 TJC Heritage were commissioned to provide heritage advice and guidance for an HLF project assessing options for a sustainable future under the Resilient Heritage Scheme. 

• Wells Cathedral:

TJC have undertaken detailed recording of the high level medieval fabric of the West Front and also an archaeoligcal watching breif within the Camery Garden.

RECENT PROJECTS

St Mary's, Lichfield, Staffordshire (on behalf of the Guild of St Mary's).  A scheme of archaeological building recording and a watching brief was undertaken during the conversion and restoration of St Mary's Church in the Market Place in Lichfield.  

Holy Trinity Church, Coventry (on behalf of Holy Trinity Church). An archaeological watching brief has been maintained during building works to construct a new toilet block against the North Aisle of the church. The entrance to the crypt beneath the 16th century Marler Chapel was re-surveyed as part of this project, involving the re-interment of disarticulated human remains.

Hazel Grove Chapel, Gt. Manchester (on behalf of Wiggett Homes). An excavation of a former non-conformist was undertaken, prior to the redevelopment of the site. 

Pentille Castle Mausoleum, Cornwall (on behalf of the Pentilie Estate). Historic building recording (HE level 3) was undertaken of the ruins of the 18th century tower mausoleum to inform a programme of conservation repairs. Following the discovery of the entrance to the crypt the remains of the tomb of Sir James Tilley were recorded prior to it being re-sealed. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-21412875
